June 23: Le Grau de Roi to Agde

Riding point to point here in Southern France where we don’t have a pre-defined route has proved to be a challenge.  Even the best Michelin maps don’t have enough detail and are not updated, and gps navigation does not work well given the tiny roads and multiple closures.  We try to let the route develop as we move forward, but sometimes it is very frustrating.  Best to relax and get accustomed to 10 km detours and closed roads and keep going.

An early start again to beat the heat, but the coolness of the morning didn’t last long.  The ride today was tedious, very hot and straight into a murderous headwind nearly the entire way.  We rode miles and miles of straight, flat, and often sandy paths with the sea on one side and thousands of small homes on the other where vacationers holiday.

The Med is beautiful, though, and we were very glad to make it to Agde where the Canal du Midi begins.

We wandered around town and bought some delicious local peaches and apricots, watched over by the town watch dog.

Tomorrow we will turn away from the sea and head toward Carcassonne, an ancient city that is a World Heritage site.  We are looking forward to a change of scenery.
